MAC

*MAC* IN A NUTSHELL: Friendly, dog friendly, has basic training, sit, down, come, shake, spin, needs some leash training.
Mac comes to us from the very same shelter that brought us Willis a few months ago:

Willis and his new mom

We were contacted by Colleen, who also helped us with Willis' rescue, and couldn't help but notice the resemblance between the two dogs: "Greetings from the Central Valley & SASA Friends. Checking in with you about another wonderful boy who you might be interested in, Mac. He's approx 2 yrs old, listed as a GSD/Mix. Friendly, dog friendly, has basic training, sit, down, come, shake, spin, needs some leash training. He tested beautifully with an intact male dog in the yard. That video is included."

UPDATE 12/5: Mac has left the shelter!

Info from Sonia: "Mac's world was turned upside down when he was brought in to the shelter as a stray on 10/30. A citizen brought him in'; we might never know if this was a good samaritan or his actual owner dumping him as a 'stray.' What we do know is that Mac once had a home. He is in good shape with a clean coat, polite, and is a trick dog, knowing sit, shake, down, even spin! Someone put effort into this dog. Someone once loved this dog. To be thrown into the chaotic shelter environment is traumatic. He is scared and has a history of barking/growling at staff. I had seen him kennelside and he would also bark and back away. It wasn’t until I saw a different volunteer take him out that I noticed he was fearful. The next time I took him outside, he would avoid me at first but approached me when I gave him treats. That's when he started to open up. He followed me around and showed me all the fun tricks he knows! He also tried to instigate play with the dogs next to his yard! Mac tested great with other dogs. Seems to be more comfortable around them. He initiates play through the fence in the cutest way! A bit nervous from the leash but was a doll with the other dogs! Needs time to warm up and can get nervous with leash pressure. Tested well with other dogs and enjoys playing once comfortable. Good potential Playful with other dogs Mac will blossom with a savvy patient handler who can provide safety, routine, consistency, and basic training."

Happy to be free! First stop, Starbucks for a Puppuccino!

UPDATE 12/12: Mac has been picked up in northern California and is on his way to Arizona!!

UPDATE 12/13: After a considerable delay, Mac finally arrived in Phoenix at the crack of dawn this morning.

We're going to give him some time to settle in and get his "desert legs" before he will be ready for introductions and adoption. We'll also try and get some photos of him when the sun comes up!

UPDATE 1/5: Mac had his first "practice" introduction today and almost wound up getting adopted! He charmed his way into the hearts of mom, dad and the three kids and performed all of his tricks for them, but when it came to their female shepherd, the answer was NO. Mac could not be deterred from trying to mount her every chance he got. We were very disappointed when the family chose another dog, but we're thinking Mac could be perfectly suited to be an only dog OR, given more time, he could become less interested in mounting/breeding. He was only neutered about 4 weeks ago, at which time testosterone levels only begin to drop. According to our vet resources, "On average, it can take several weeks to a few months for a dog's testosterone levels to stabilize at a lower rate. During this time, you might still observe some behaviors influenced by the hormone, although they typically decrease in frequency and intensity." If Mac had been neutered at an early age, this would probably not be an issue; however, since he was neutered as an adult, it takes more time (especially if Mac has been used for breeding, which we have no way of knowing).

Adoption fee $345.00.
