These three beautiful 7 week old babies (DOB: 5-11-2025 ~ Mother's Day) were found as "strays" in the Los Angeles area. They were thin, flea bitten and weary -- it was unknown how long they'd been out on their own and/or had managed to survive. We hate to think that these pups were in this condition while being taken care of by someone! We first heard about them on Sunday, August 3rd. With our pullers/transporters Chuck and Jon out of commission due to a distemper outbreak, we didn't know how we could possibly help them ... but we were sure going to try!

According to their shelter records, the pups came in on July 20th, with Milo weighing 7.1 pounds and Jane 4.75! A week later, on July 27th, Milo was 11.4 and Jane was 9.4! After another week, Milo weighed in at a healthy 12.6 pounds, with Jane at 10.5. The pups had almost doubled their weight in a mere 2 weeks!

Out of desperation, we posted on Facebook, and Donna immediately replied. She was off work the following day (Monday) and was ready, willing and able to go to the shelter and pick up these three; however, she couldn't take them home and needed a place for them to go. At least we now had a puller!!

We then reached out to our dear friend, Cindy, in Riverside. Cindy has been a long-time transporter, adopter and supporter of our rescue. Unfortunately, she had a houseful and wasn't able to assist with temporary housing, so we continued our search.

A call from Cindy later on that evening told us that she would take the pups for a couple of days if we could get them to her. We were making progress, but still needed a confirmed pull and transport to Cindy, then transport to Arizona.

We then heard from Lindsay, one of our adopters and current fosters. Her sister, Jennifer, was in the L.A. area and could help. A call to Jennifer found that she, too, could go to the shelter; however, she could not keep the pups at her house, nor could she transport to Arizona. Since we already had Donna prepared to go to the shelter, we put Jennifer on "hold" and continued our attempt to put this rescue mission together.

UPDATE 8/4: The next morning, only 2 of the pups were listed on the shelter's website. We confirmed with the shelter that one of the pups (a boy) had been adopted at close of business last night, so we were down to 2, a boy and a girl (Jane & Milo). Donna checked in to confirm that she was headed to the shelter in about an hour -- unfortunately, we had to tell her that the shelter was CLOSED today (Monday) which meant that Donna was no longer able to assist since she had to work on Tuesday.

Thankfully, we had Jennifer waiting in the wings and she will be at the shelter tomorrow morning to pick up Jane and Milo and transport them to Cindy in Riverside where they will spend the evening. On Wednesday, one of our staff members and volunteer Lucas (who was given the day off with pay by Shane Jewelers) will be hitting the road to pick up our latest rescues.

Please check back tomorrow for updates on the pups' pull from the shelter and transport to safety in Riverside. We would like to get the pups into a foster or foster-to-adopt home ASAP so, if you're interested, we'd love to hear from you.

If you would like to help the pups, please CLICK HERE to make a donation or honor a pledge. Jane and Milo would be most appreciative.

UPDATE 8/5: It seems there's never been a dull moment since we first started planning to help these pups. A call last evening let us know that our volunteer, Lucas, had wound up in the ER with abdominal pain. He was scanned and sent to the hospital. First thing this morning, we were told that the diagnosis was "bladder stones" and surgery was scheduled for this afternoon. Our transport for tomorrow to pick up Jane and Milo has been temporarily put on hold until we can determine Lucas' outcome.

And if things couldn't get any more confusing, Jennifer got to the shelter just after noon to pick the pups up and was told that, since the pups were now healthy and no longer sick (they had had URIs), she couldn't take them because they had to be put on the schedule for spay/neuter surgery before they left the shelter!! We were appalled that they would do surgery on such young puppies, particularly Jane, but no amount of talking by either Jennifer or our staff member got us anywhere. We had just spoken to shelter personnel yesterday afternoon and received the go-ahead to pick them up. Another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing (or saying). So, we had Jennifer adopt the pups on our behalf and get them on the schedule for surgery (either August 8th or 12th), after which we will find SOMEONE to return to the shelter to pick them up.

Jennifer moved on to the adoption counter where she spent over an hour filling out paperwork. When she was finished, she was told that she was being given a "waiver" until October 2025 to get the spay/neuter surgeries done (the pups could either be brought back to the shelter -- NOT GONNA HAPPEN!! -- or they could be altered privately) and that she could take the pups with her today!!

So, on to the pickup desk Jennifer went, only to be challenged by the person at the desk there and told she could NOT take the pups with her today! As of this update, we're still awaiting the outcome and it's just after 4pm.

UPDATE 8/6: Jane and Milo have arrived in Phoenix!!!

The pups started out from Riverside early this morning ...

... and arrived in Ehrenberg thanks to Cindy around noon

They were a bit bewildered

Lucas takes Jane out first

Our thanks go out to Shane Co. for giving Lucas the day off as a "Volunteer Day" to allow him to accompany our staff member on the transport. We had to take the pups by for a visit on our way.

Needless to say, the puppies were a huge hit!

Our thanks go out to Lindsay and her family for offering Jane and Milo a foster home

FIRST FOSTER REPORT 8/7: "Yes, they are so darling!!! And so attached to each other if one goes around the corner, the other one goes looking for them. Roo has taken to being a mommy to them several times. She's tried to grab them by the neck to move them. I am having to watch that but she feels like they're her babies as you can tell. Milo has no fear; he keeps protecting Jane.

The two of them are attached at the hip. It is the cutest little thing. I really hope someone does adopt them together. I don't even know how they will deal with a separation anxiety, especially Milo, even though he's the leader, he constantly is looking for Jane. Where she looks for more human contact, he looks for her. But they both have the best personalities -- spunky cute. They're gonna be great dogs and easy -- if I call them back from something they come immediately they know it's a no no. They are so bright. They'll be easy to train!! They definitely don't like their kennel.

I don't know why these dogs were put out. They're perfect even down to the personalities exactly what you want. calm centered, not hyper They looked to be easily trainable, beautiful dogs."

Note from foster mom Lindsay: In case somebody is reading this and is not used to male German shepherds, Milo is a typical male German shepherd. The two male German shepherds I have had needed less love; they loved me. They wanted my attention, but then they go lay down. They get their belly, rubs and where the female I have is always up in my face wanting more more more more so I feel he's being a true male German Shepherd. He's also alert and always looking around observing his surroundings and I have noticed that he is a great dog. They both are playing their parts exactly what you'd expect.

FOSTER UPDATE 8/8: "They are so good in their kennel. They play outside for a little while eat, drink, poop & pee. I get them a little wet and then I put them in the kennel and they go to sleep and they don't cry, but I really do believe they're this good because they have each other ... I want to tell you they're so stinking cute and easy. I would take them if I could. I just wish I had an acre outside. I mean, it's almost like not having puppies. They're so good."

We found a new hiding place!

Jane (left) & Milo

UPDATE 8/17: The pups were evaluated by two trainers, Shelby and Jamie, with Soldier's Best Friend for entry into a pilot program that plans to bring in youngsters and raise them in the SBF program so that they can be paired with veterans at 8 to 9 months. Both puppies passed with flying colors, with the trainers seeing potential in each of them. Jane weighed in at just over 10 pounds, with Milo hitting a hefty 14.5 pounds. They're growing fast!

An umbrella ... no problem!

The evaluation begins

Shelby gives Milo the once-over ...

... and then it's Jane's turn

Milo found a kitty toy

We will know if the "Puppy Program" is approved by the end of the month. If the puppies are not taken in by SBF, they will be available for placement in foster-to-adopt homes. Please check back for updates.

Jane makes a friend

UPDATE 9/2 6pm: Unfortunately, the Puppy Program was not approved for the 2025 calendar year. The puppies are doing well and growing like weeds. They received their next set of puppy shots this week and were dewormed again (as a precaution). They have the routine at their temporary foster home down pat. When it's naptime. they march indoors and straight into their crate, where they are happy to spend the rest of the morning and well into the afternoon napping. No accidents have been reported!

We would love to place Jane and Milo together; however, we understand that not every family is ready, willing or able to take on two puppies. But, these pups are something special -- they keep each other company, happy and out of mischief! If the right home doesn't come along to offer them both a forever family together, we will, of course, separate them to go into the right loving homes.

UPDATE 9/9:

Happy puppies with lots of toys

UPDATE 9/30:

Milo (at left) and Jane enjoy a lazy afternoon in one of their favorite spots

The puppies are growing like weeds and Milo will soon be ready for his neuter surgery. We're going to wait a bit longer for Jane, since females need more time before undergoing surgery. They are sweet and playful and just a pleasure to have around. Once Milo is neutered (in the next week or two) we will begin the separation process and offer the puppies for adoption separately. We will be sure to pair them with other partner playmates at their foster home, and they will also have play time together.

UPDATE 10/6: Milo has been scheduled for his neuter surgery on October 14th. He will be checked over by our vet and updated on any vaccinations that he might need. After a suitable recovery period, which will begin with his separation from his sister, Jane, he will be available for adoption. Jane is available to a foster-to-adopt home. Her spay surgery will be scheduled in approximately a month's time.

UPDATE 10/14: Milo checked in for his neuter surgery bright and early this morning. He weighed in at a very healthy 38+ pounds and was given a clean bill of health.

Happy to be home in his own backyard again

UPDATE 11/3: Now that they've reached 6 months of age, the Milo (orange vest) and Jane (blue vest) were re-evaluated by Shelby and Jaime from Soldier's Best Friend, with our adopter and supporter Jim, lending a helping hand, as well as the head of the Perryville Prison Program, Mary. They both passed with flying colors and were accepted into the program! Milo will be joining them around the second week in November and Jane will join after her spay on November 13th. We couldn't imagine a better outcome for these two personable pups.

First order of business, an opportunity to play outside and get dirty!

Jane was up first

Milo was up next

Neither pup was initially a fan of meeting "Cesar" (the fake black dog) ...

... but both decided he was OK in the end

UPDATE 11/13: Jane checked into our vet's office for her spay surgery this morning, while Milo headed off to Soldier's Best Friend with trainer, Shelby. She has promised us lots of updates and photos when he joins the Prison Program in a few weeks -- we are so proud to have another of our rescue furkids joining their ranks. Jane will be following him after her recovery.
