EFFIE

*EFFIE* IN A NUTSHELL: Very sweet but shy 2 year old girl.
We first heard about Effie on December 1st from our facebook angel, Kathy J. Effie had been living in a high kill shelter in CA since November 13th after arriving there as a stray and was now on borrowed time. We were trying not to increase our numbers before the year end holidays, but thanks to the support of some wonderful people, we were able to say YES to Effie's plea.

To her chagrin, Effie just laughed

UPDATE 1/4: Effie has made her way to Phoenix and has taken up residence with foster mom, Wendy.

Wendy lets Effie know all is well

FIRST FOSTER REPORT: "She's had some training. Went out on the leash. Only pulled a couple of times, peed then pooped. She looked at me and licked her lips like she was expecting a treat. Came in and when I got out a treat she sat without me saying anything. She started exploring and went to her dish again and again so I fed her. She wolfed it down and keeps going back and licking it. She just lay down next to me."

We're going to let Effie settle in for a bit then have her checked for a spay scar at our vet's next week. She will be updated on vaccinations as necessary and microchipped. We anticipare Effie will be ready for adoption in approximately two weeks. According to Wendy, she is a calm, loving companion.

FOSTER UPDATE 1/27: "Effie has completely recovered from her surgery and is ready to run, jump and chase birds. Now that she's feeling better she also wants to be petted but is very patient when I'm working and isn't a pest. She lies quietly in my office until I have time to pay attention to her.

She runs and hides when someone comes into the house. She doesn't bark, just hides. We went to Home Depot for our first outing to get her some socializing. It was very traumatic for her. We stood outside for a while and eventually went inside. She was curious until someone came close. People were wonderful when I told her that they weren't going to touch her or do anything to her. They either smiled or nodded and ignored her. I got many compliments from the staff on how well behaved she was.

Effie has pretty much adapted to our routine. She will even get into her crate if there's a treat involved. She and I are still working on our communication but it's getting better.

FOSTER UPDATE 2/7: "Effie has had a busy week. She loves her tug rope and will play with me briefly. As soon as she gets it away from me, she prefers to chew on it. She has started playing with her ball and occasionally will give it to me to toss for her. Sometimes she'll even bring it back. If there is a noise outside that she's unsure of, she goes into protective mode and will sit in front of me and watch the door. When I assure her that everything is okay, she will lie down at my feet until she is comfortable that nothing is going to happen. When someone comes to the door she bolts and tries to hide. Effie reluctantly got into the tub but stood patiently while I shampooed her. It was her first bath and she did great. She did ask for a treat when I was finished.

Our trip to Lowe's didn't go smoothly. About nine feet through the door she emptied her bowels. The staff was wonderful and helped me clean up. We kept walking around and she seemed to settle down until a man came up and tried to pet her. She cowered behind me and sat down. The man did apologize for not asking if he could pet her. We stayed there for a bit and headed to Ace Hardware. Our time there went smoothly. She sat beside me while I asked for help finding something and didn't cower too much. Effie is excellent in the car and she went right to sleep when we left Ace to come home."

UPDATE 2/5: After Effie's experiences at Lowe's and Ace Hardware, we decided to see how she would do with another friend to play with. The introduction to Zuko went amazingly well and the two spent the rest of the afternoon, chasing and wearing each other out. We think it's safe to say that Effie would love another dog in the family to play with.

Let the games begin!

UPDATE 2/6: Effie did so well with Zuko yesterday, we decided to introduce her to Mac this afternoon and she did equally as well with him. She is a changed girl! She's happy, friendly and sweet and just easy to be around. What a change!
