| *CASPAR* IN A NUTSHELL: (According to the shelter) "This beautiful girl is 2 year old Caspar. She arrived at the shelter as a stray in May. She's a young energetic girl who enjoys the company of her human friends. She can get mouthy and jumpy but responds well when you divert her attention and energy into engagement training like leash work and basic obedience. After a few exercises, she calms down tremendously and all she wants is to get lots of pets. Caspar has been in playgroup many times and is consistently described as social and tolerant. She is also labeled as a greeter dog." She would probably do best with an experienced GSD owner and as an only dog, unless there's a very easy-going male (dog) in the household that she can boss around. |
| We received a last minute, "Hail Mary" call from a fellow rescuer in California about Caspar who had somehow found her way to the e-list at a California kill shelter due to "mouthy behavior." What? We were told, "She's just too good a dog to let die," so we had to investigate further. The video we received said it all.

UPDATE 7/8: Luckily, Caspar has a guardian angel and she was pulled from the shelter this morning. Transport to Phoenix will be arranged for her by the end of July. ![]() Freedom! UPDATE 7/16: A call today told us that Caspar's "free" ride to Phoenix had been reneged upon and that the only way to get her to us was by PAID transport, which we could not afford. A quick message to our dear friends at Husky Camp, and Caspar was picked up the next day and, as of now, she is enjoying their hospitality until a ride to Phoenix can be arranged.
UPDATE 8/1: ![]() Loaded up and heading to Phoenix
UPDATE 8/4: Caspar is settling in well to her temporary foster home with one of our staff members. She has some insecurities which cause her to become defensive, but she quickly snaps out of it once you make her realize that everything is OK. She is definitely possessive (and aggressive) with other dogs around her food dish; that is definitely being worked on, although we do not ask any of our dogs to share their food or dish. She's a beautiful girl but it's obvious she has been starved and has had to forage and fight for food just to keep her alive. We'll soon convince her that her food is her own and that she will have as much as she needs without fear of it being taken from her. UPDATE 10/17: Cassie is doing well and continues to make improvements every day. She is no longer possessive with her foster mom around her food dish; we haven't tested her around another dog as yet but we don't ask any of our dogs to share their food, so it's not a deal-breaker for us. Her foster mom picked up a broom today and halfway expected Cassie to run, but what she did do surprised us -- she wanted to play!! She loved the sweeping motion of the broom and thought it was the best thing ever, dropping down into play posture and attempting to grab the broom! We're going to try and get a video of her this week. Adoption fee to be determined.
